I have always enjoyed using stitch. When i was young i would produce lengths of fabric using patchwork techniques, using up recycled bits of fabrics; usually old clothes and fabrics my mother had left over as a dress maker. As an artist I still use stitch and fabrics and recycle materials, but i also love paint and paper and the technique i have devised allows me to combine all of these.I am not so much interested in textiles, but find stitch allows me to combine, embellish and attach various materials together to create interesing images. The work i produce has always had an illustrative quality.

In college a continual theme in my work was to draw distorted imagery; animals, portraits, scenes and translate into fabric and stitch. The surreal, obscure, quirky images of  illustrators and painters inspire me and especially the low brow art scene in Western America and the amazing works of Mark Ryden, Scott Musgrave,Travis Louie, Rob Sato and Joe To and in Japan Yoshitomo Nara .

In 2006 I travelled to South East Asia where i visited Laos, Tibet, China and Mongolia and then Japan. This experience fueled the inspiration for some new work, which looked at tribal identity through clothing and embellishment and also ancient Chinese communication and rituals. Enjoying the interaction with local people, but finding that it was difficult with no mutual language, i decided to use pencil and paper as a form of communication. i drew portraits of local people, giving them the drawing as a gift in return for their company.

Aswell as working on the series 'The lives of birds-an alternative ornitology' i am slowing building up a series of pieces based on the several sets of tribal shoes i picked up in Western China and Mongolia. These are beautiful shoes with fine craftmanship and intricate detail. My aim is to finely paint each shoe onto a canvas and embroider the significant pattern on, which represents the tribe. Each tribe would have a significant design and technique that they would use.The latest piece i have produced can be found on the home page.
